TerraSAR-X collects its first images 4 Days after the launch!

-

Just 4 days after the German radar satellite TerraSAR-X has been launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the first satellite images have been received by the DLR.

Although the satellite will only reach its final orbital position in 10 days’ time, these data – recorded for test purposes only – already display a remarkably high quality and level of detail.

Norway
The island of Vanna in centre of the image lies north of the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, about 250 kilometres southwest of the North Cape.

Russia
The first TerraSAR-X picture, for which DLR supplied the processing system, shows a region in the south Russian Steppes about 500 kilometres northeast of the Black Sea and about 50 kilometres west of Volgograd.

Italia
The surface of the Ionian Sea beside the Calabrian coast of southern Italy appears in the picture like a fissured cloud. This TerraSAR-X image actually shows texture on the sea surface, which results from different wave heights, flow conditions, substances near the surface (such as algae) or oil pollution.
