International Charter on Space and Major Disasters
Natural disasters: ready-to-use images within 24 hours
- The leading space agencies have made their satellites available for humanitarian purposes by signing the International Charter on 'Space and Major Disasters'.
The member agencies are ESA, CNES, CSA, ISRO, NOAA , CONAE , USGS , JAXA , and DMCII .
.

They have committed themselves to pooling resources in terms of the Charter (RADARSAT, ERS, SPOT satellite images among others) in order to help lessen the impact of such disasters on people and property.

- Spot Image plays a very active role in this arrangement through:
  • daily monitoring and continual transmission of information to the satellite programming team which is always on standby,
  • by programming satellites for emergency viewing to evaluate damage and inform rescue teams on the spot,
  • by searching through its archive for images to enable multidate comparisons, which are indispensable for evaluating damage.
