The state-of-the-art Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) is a highly-automated data reception facility that acquires data from a variety of low-earth orbiting satellites (SPOT-2, SPOT-4, SPOT-5, ERS-2, ENVISAT, RADARSAT-1, TERRA, AQUA).  The facility, part of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, is located at the University's Richmond Campus in southern Miami-Dade County, Florida. CSTARS includes two radome-housed 11.3 meter diameter X-band antennas for data acquisition, as well as an advanced processing and archiving core consisting of a 32-CPU Silicon Graphics processing server, a 256 TByte robotic tape library for raw satellite data archiving, more than 100TBytes of RAID storage, and numerous computers for dedicated data analysis. CSTARS is connected to the University’s main campus and the outside world by a 10Gb/s fiber optic network infrastructure.

In addition to the remote sensing mission, the Richmond Campus also hosts a 20 meter diameter antenna for satellite communications applications. Its current mission is to provide Internet service (data and voice) to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, which is too isolated for anything but satellite communication, via a link with the "retired" NOAA GOES-3 satellite. The satellite communications group also performs regular command and control procedures to keep GOES-3 in an optimum geo-synchronous orbit for maximum visibility by the South Pole Station.
