VEGETATION

-
Characteristics
- VEGETATION is a multispectral instrument flown on the Spot 4 and Spot 5 satellites.

Its images have a constant resolution of 1 km for the whole field of view of 2400 km , offering almost daily coverage of the whole of the Earth's surface.

Of its 4 spectral bands, the 3 bands characterising vegetation (visible and near infrared) are identical to those of the Spot HRVIR and HRG instruments, which enable linked studies and interpretation at several space and time scales. The 4th band, in the blue wavelength is used for atmospheric corrections for the 3 other bands.

-
Applications
- The main VEGETATION missions include continuous, regional and global monitoring of the continental biosphere to supply accurate measurements of the main vegetation coverage characteristics, particularly for agricultural production and the effects of deforestation. VEGETATION also provides information on the colour of sea water, which is used for oceanography applications.

Products
- There are three types of VEGETATION product available:
  • primary products (P), extracted from a single image segment,
  • daily (S1) or ten-day (S10) syntheses; these are mosaics of acquired image segments, respectively for 24h periods and for the last 10 days.
  • vegetation indices (NDVI) calculated from daily or ten-day syntheses.
