Lying 4 kilometres offshore, The World is a chain of 250 to 300 small artificial islands laid out in the shape of the world’s main continents and islands. Each island will range from 2 to 8 hectares, separated from the next by 50 to 100 metres of water. The chain will cover a total area of 9 kilometres in width and 6 kilometres in length, surrounded by an oval-shaped breakwater. Dredging and fill work should be completed this year. North America and Greenland surround the show island and villa. Below, South America with its Andean ridge lies opposite Africa. Work on Asia is well advanced, but Europe, South Asia and Oceania have not yet surfaced. The sandbank to the south will be Antarctica.
